I am turning into a Russian doll of learning. I have decided to take an e-course about e-learning called E- Learning and Digital Cultures offered through Coursera. I’ve read about free e-courses for quite some time and have had them on my professional development “to-do” list, but never got around to them. I had the itch a few weeks ago, checked out my options, and this one tickled my fancy. It is right in line with the research I have done in the areas of distance education and reference librarianship, particularly when it comes to the evolving nature of the needs of the millennial generation user.

This particular course is 5 weeks long and is offered through the University of Edinburgh (oh Edinburgh, how I miss you!). I’m looking forward to interacting with such a wide variety of users from around the world. I’m curious to see whether this will lead to diverse opinions or if that will be counteracted by selection bias. I will be posting my progress and observations here, so let’s see how this experiment goes!

I too am taking a Coursera course on Financial Planning. It is a little more basic than I expected, but I am still learning (and getting refreshed) on a few topics. How are you finding the E-learning and Digital Cultures course?

I agree that the initial reading material is pretty basic- but in a refreshing way. It’s laying a foundation for what I hope to be some interesting discussions. We also have a group of film clips to watch and discuss. These are going to provide some of the real meat of the digital cultures portion of the course. I haven’t had a chance to look at them yet- but I’ll let you know when I do!
